About this course
This course is by Jungian analyst, historian and author, Anne Baring (née Gage) and draws upon her first book, of the same title, published in 1961 by Vincent Stuart, London, as well as a talk she gave to The Fintry Trust Summer School in 2023. The course has been produced for Integral Wisdom, the online learning platform by The Fintry Trust.
In the course Anne Baring describes her quest to discover the underlying meaning of Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism and Christianity and how their message is essentially identical: the re-union of the conscious human self with the divine ground of being.
Her journeys to India and the Far East in the 1950s brought her into contact with the rich spiritual heritage of the eastern traditions and their embodiment in the magnificent sculptures and paintings that reflect them. These journeys opened her eyes to the deeper meaning and message of the Christian myth and the essential teaching of the inner mystical path shared by all religions.

Journeys to the East
Anne introduces her two journeys to the East in 1956 and 1957, and her quest to understand the quintessential message of Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism, and relate this to a deeper understanding of Christianity. Her first book The One Work: Journey to the Self encapsulates all that she learned from her travels.

III. Hinduism
Hinduism
In this module, you will learn about Hindu cosmology, the nature and destiny of human beings, and the different pathways of reunion with the sacred source. This section introduces key ideas such as Brahman, Atman, Karma, Maya, amongst others, and draws upon the beautiful and sacred texts of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.

V. Daoism
Daoism
In this module you will learn that in Daoism ‘The All is ultimately One’. The One unfolds the many and everything is in a constant state of flux and change. There is a balance between Yin and Yang, Feminine and Masculine. Daoism has a profound respect for nature, and its response to life is gentle, balanced, dynamic and wise.

VI. Christianity
Christianity
This section introduces the original teachings of Christ which focussed on love, compassion and non-violence, and critically distinguishes them from the later teachings of the Christian Church, which emphasised original sin, as a result of the myth of the Fall of Man. Such beliefs have had implications for western attitudes towards nature, women, the body, and ethnic groups.

VII. Heaven and Earth are One
Heaven and Earth are One
In the final module, Anne explains that all four paths speak of our essential divine, immortal nature, and the path to experience it. She argues that today we no longer recognise that the earth is part of a Sacred Cosmic Order. Our purpose is to awaken and to recognise that we do have a role on this planet, that ‘Heaven and Earth are One and everything is God’.
